Fans! Stand up for your nation!

Could the Saudi team face the reality of having the least fans at the stadium watching their world cup 2006 games? What could possibly cause a lack of interest from the most passionate football lovers in the Middle East region?

Already it’s expected that Tunisian, Ukrainian and Spanish fans will swarm the football stadium during their games against Saudi. The Saudis will play against Tunisia, which has a large population in Germany and its neighboring states. To make matter worse, Ukrainian and Spanish fans are so close to their home country that the game will be almost like a home game to them.

In Saudi Arabia, there has been a consistent pursue for supporters in the major football league and also during the world cup qualifying games. I remember the entrance to the game against Uzbekistan was free after someone offered to pay for it and offered to give out world cup ticket prizes. Also, sometimes Hilal club president offers free ticket to Hilal fans to support during important games. Interestingly this is not a practice elsewhere in Europe or North America, but has succeeded in producing results.

Why the supporters? There is a strong relationship between players and fans. I have noticed that fans’ level of excitement directly affect the players’ enthusiasm for playing. With the Saudi society being a collective society, people’s approval really makes a big deal in the game. The Saudis like to say that the 12th player in the team is the fans. I am not sure, if it’s commonly said elsewhere.

In recent news, the German ambassador to Saudi, said there has been few application for visa to Germany. There doesn’t look to be any rush for visa, even the World Cup 2006 is once every 4 year tournament. It sounds like we are going to have some scary opponent fans all over the stadium. The Saudi football federation offered to provide free tickets to Saudi residing in Germany and neighboring countries. I think we need to support the team as much a possible. With three appearances already, we can make the fourth appearance a remarkable by having enthusiastic fans.

Why the lack of interest? I don’t think it’s too expensive to go to the games. But I hope it’s not because people are thinking the Saudi’s appearance will not be worth it. Let me tell you! If you are there, the Saudis are going to get the support they need, and if you are not then obviously you letting them down. So better pack up and fly to Germany to support our “Watan”

Dear Shahed,

I hope your wish will become true! I want to let you know, that I am the greatest german fan of your fantastic team. I bought a tst 7 ticket for saudi arabia, because I wanted to see the worldcup-final. Your team did not leave me allone - they qualyfied!
So my biggest dream comes true - I will join the world-cup final in Berlin on July 9th.

I want to show my respect and thank your team by supporting you as long as you are in the tournament and as loud as I can!

I hope that the support of a german guy is not a problem for you, due to the different cultures we come from. I learned to know some guys from Saudi Arabia when your (our) team played portugal in a friendly match in Dusseldorf. Although Saudi Arabia lost, we had a very great time. There was no problem because of Islam / Christians. They not even mindet me, drinking beer.
I hope to make such positive impressions during the world cup. Let´s hope, that lot of Saudi Arabia supporters will cry and scream their team at least to the round of 16.

If you or anyone else could tell me, on which tv-channels I can watch the friendly matches of Saudi Arabia (e.g. Belgium), I would be very very thankful. With my digital receiver I can receive over 300 channels e.g. Saudi 1.

Just tell me where I can see those games, maybe via live-stream in the internet.

Have a great time in germany and remember that it´s “a time to make friends”

Take care

Markus

Salam Shahed,

What do you expect? Saudi fans have never been the greatest travelling supporters.

First of all, we’re not organised: we don’t plan ahead. It’s virtually unheard of for anyone to buy tickets well in advance and make travel arrangements. Saudi fans just do “hop in the car and go”.

Second, we’re not the kind who’d spend their savings to watch their team in the world cup. Saudi fans already whinge about the price of tickets in Saudi, when they’re many times lower than World cup tickets. They complain about 30 Riyals!

The biggest problem though is that the Saudi FA is totally useless. All these months and they’ve been sleeping in the honey. They didn’t tell anybody when how and where they can get tickets from the SAFF ticket allocation.

Until all of a sudden they found out that the world cup is only a month away yet they haven’t distributed any tickets to fans. So they do this last minute appeal for expat Saudis to register their application at the local embassy without giving them any time.

Me and my friends have applied. We still don’t know if we’ll get tickets, and even if we do, time is so short, we don’t know if we can get visas in time. What a mess!

John,

In a recent news, the paper indicated that the Saudi Football Federation had a website up in which students in Germany, France and Uk could easily get a ticket. I am not sure if the ticket for the games are free or not. The website is (www.mofa.gov.sa).

John,

maybe I might bore you, but there is still a way to get tickets from the official website http://www.fifaworldcup.com

There is a resale-programme for all those, who bought tickets before the final draw and want to resell them.

Especially for the KSA matches there are very often tickets in this pool, you just have to check frequently.

I got three tickets for the Tunisia match, because I wanted my girlfriend, my father and another friend to join me supporting Saudi Arabia.

The price for one ticket was far below 100$.

Shahed´s way of getting tickets for free is sure the best ;-)

But if it doesn´t work, you still cant try the official ticket shop.

There are tickets sold in front of the stadium too, those are tickets, that returned last minute from sponsors. But noone knows how many tickets that are and your way to the stadium is sure longer than mine.

Good luck for your search!

And let´s hope Saudi Arabia will succeed tonite in Belgium.

Take care

Markus

Thanks for the ticket information Markus.

Sadly I will not be in Germany this coming summer. I was really hoping to be there, but due to an internship in Washington, DC, I will be busy working. I might not get to see some of the games, as I will be at office during the game times.

Marcus, thanks for supporting the team.(I know you will do a good job supporting the team). We need people like you in our side.

Its perfectly ok for you to support the Saudi team. Hehe. I think half of the world supports team other than their own teams. For example, i know so many people supporting Brazil even though they are not Brazillian.

Shahed,

as I told you, I have a very good reason to support the Saudi Team: They made my dream come true, to be in the stadium during a WC-final. This is a dream that I had, since I was a little boy.
Of course, the german team is important for me too. But I swore to give all I can for the Saudi team, as long as they are in the tournament - and I expect MORE than 3 matches.
I will do my very best.
I just had the fear, that it might be a problem for Saudi fans, to see a german guy with a saudi flag and a saudi jersey.
We both know, that there are differences in our culture and I don´t want to hurt somebody´s feelings.
For example drinking alcohol is nothing bad in our country/culture. Everyone knows this, when coming to germany. But I wondered how Saudi Arabian guys react, seeing some german guy, drinking beer and wearing the saudi jersey.
But my worries returned to zero since I learned to know some Saudi Arabian students during the match in Dusseldorf. They told me that they dont´t mind my beer, as long as I cry as loud as I can for the team :-)
(and I did - if you send me an email, so that I have your adress, I could proove with a very nice picture)

Don´t misunderstand me - I think it is a matter of respect at least to ask for your feelings about these things. YOU and the whole football-world are our guests in 4 weeks. And I want to be a good host.

I am very sad, that you don´t have the chance to be here for the games.
Nevertheless, please keep me/us all up to date with news about the team. You do a great job.

Take care

Markus

Hi markus,
I’m writting this reply while my body is here in Saudi Arabia and my heart is in Germany. I am a sauddi, arabian, muslim. And you know what, I am very very very glad and happy to hear from you that you are going to support our team. Of course we won’t mind to see any person, of any culture or any religion to wear our natinal jersey and support our team. In fact, we will be appriciating this behaviour.
We, Germany and Humanity should be proud of people like you who proves that it is possible for people of different cultures and religions to live in piece together, love each other and be civilized.

GO MARKUS… wear the saudi shirt… drink whatever you like… cheer up… support Saudi… and I will be looking for you on the TV.

THANKS AND GOOD LUCK!
