Saudi World Cup Games will be aired on Saudi Sports Channel (ground transmission)

May 15th, 2006 | By: Shahed | 9 Comments »

King Abdullah intervened on behalf of all the Saud fans and ordered all of the games of Saudi Arabia be shown on Saudi Sports Channel (ground transmission). This is to make easy for all Saudi fans to watch.

I don’t think ART was really happy about it, as they can’t say “no” to higher authority.

But what about the rest of the world cup games? I don’t think the whole world cup is just the Saudi games. The joy of the world cup comes from watching every nation play ball. I am telling you, this World Cup Media monopoly needs to be removed.

Lucky for me, I don’t have pay “specifically” for the world cup games. I will be in the America by then, and will watch it on ESPN, that comes along the TV cable. The way ESPN makes its money is through advertisement. In America, companies are willing to be put their ads around the game times, as there will be huge number of viewers. It’s like the Super Bowl, where you don’t pay to watch it, but the corporate does. Talk about the super bowl – who haven’t watched it!! The World Cup Games should have ads as crazy as the super bowl.

WHAT? I lived in Saudi Arabia for a long time and you could count on watching all the football world cup matches on local tv.

Don’t tell me that isn’t possible anymore? That is just too much.

Hi pungnate

Yes, it is indeed not possible now. Specially since the saudi channels are themselves aired via satellite to different parts of the world.

I was really happy to hear that the saudi matches will be aired on local channels. That’s exactly what was done in the last world cup in korea.

My only hope now is that they air all the other matches. I’ve seen them do this before, (they aired a completely different channel over saudi channel 2 frequency, it was neither channel 1 or 2 or saudi sports..kinda like a raw stream)

I’ll keep you guys informed, as I will be in jeddah soon.

Bye for now.

Explorer.

Hey Explorer,

I don’t live in Saudi anymore but my family is still there and my dad and bro. are huge football nuts.

They had a receiver installed a few months ago in order to watch the matches, but unfortunately a huge building has been constructed and they aren’t getting anything.

They will be extremely disappointed.

[...] In Saudi, the King had to force ART to show the Saudi World Cup games for free through ground transmission. Saudi Arabia has so many expatriates, that it would make sense to show all games for free. [...]

This is absurd to learn that ART have no marketing plan in Saudi Arab. Information can only be found if one looked for it just like searching for pearl in the desert sand.

ART’s pricing strategy also unfriendly towards its viewers. It would cost RS 1650 (Saudi Ryals) for one to have all the matches of 2006 world cup at one’s home. If they had right marketing mix according to demographic of the country, they would have had affordable package for most expatriates and some Saudis who only care to see some important matches throughout the tournament.

I would hope they could take some immediate steps to make some packages available for 2006 world cup games. It would be a great relief for thousands of die hard fans who are currently residing in Saudi Arabia and not to mention a healthy boost in profit margin.

Hi IronKid, you could go to the dish market in Labanon and might find some alternative to ART. Good Luck.
